Your artwork tells the printer what to print and the laser where to cut. When files are sized correctly, colors are prepared properly, and print and cut elements are separated, production can move forward with fewer delays and fewer unexpected results.

Which File Format Should You Use?
The best format depends on whether the file will be printed, cut, or used for both processes.
Best All-Around Format
Ideal for final print files and required for cut files. PDFs preserve size, vector paths, and layout more reliably than many other formats.
Strong for Vector Artwork
Useful for logos, illustrations, and print artwork that should remain editable and scalable.
Print Artwork Only
Suitable for high-resolution photographic or flattened print artwork. JPEG files cannot supply usable vector cut paths.
Useful for Transparency
Helpful for transparent-background print artwork when saved at the correct size and resolution. Not suitable as a cut file.

UV Print
Artwork is printed onto an existing blank or sheet.
- Artwork sized to final print dimensions
- High-resolution images where applicable

- White ink or spot gloss layers when requested

Laser Cut
Vector paths tell the laser where to cut.
- A vector PDF
- Closed cut paths

- No duplicate or overlapping cut paths
Print & Cut
Artwork is printed first, then aligned and cut.
- A print file with artwork and registration marks
- A cut file with cut paths and matching registration marks

How to Set Up Registration Marks
Registration marks allow the laser-cut file to align with the artwork that has already been printed. They must be easy for the production system to identify and must match perfectly between both files.
Size
Each registration mark should be a .25-inch diameter circle.
Color
Registration marks should use CMYK black: 100% C, 100% M, 100% Y, and 100% K.
Placement
Keep all registration marks outside the printed artwork and outside the finished product area.

Bleed, Safe Areas, and Edge Tolerance
Important artwork should not sit directly against the final cut line. Small production tolerances are normal in any print-and-cut workflow.
Bleed
Extend background colors or images beyond the cut line so a slight shift does not create an unprinted edge.
Safe Area
Keep text, logos, faces, and other critical details comfortably inside the cut line.
Cut Tolerance
Avoid extremely narrow borders that would make a small alignment difference more visible.
Prepare Artwork for Better Print Results
Printed color can vary based on the material, white ink setup, artwork profile, texture, transparency, and finish.

Common Artwork and File Setup Mistakes
Scaling after upload can change text size, stroke weight, registration mark size, and the relationship between print and cut artwork.
Even a small difference in placement can prevent the print and cut files from aligning correctly.
Open paths may not cut as expected, while duplicate lines can cause the laser to cut the same area more than once.
Text and logos near the cut line are more likely to appear uneven if normal production tolerance occurs.
Enlarging a small web image does not create additional detail and can produce a blurry final print.
Artwork printed on clear, dark, metallic, or colored material may look very different without a planned white layer.
